ABOUT US
Funds

Legacy Foundation offers a variety of fund options to help you meet your philanthropic goals and respond to community needs. From donor-advised funds (which allow you to engage in active grantmaking) to community funds for the benefit of Lake County (which rely on the Foundationís knowledge of the community for grantmaking decisions), our funds allow you to select the manner in which you want to invest in our community. Choose the one that matches your personal approach to giving and your charitable interests. Our staff is eager to discuss these options with you and to help you select one that matches your giving needs.

Designated Funds
Oftentimes, donors wish to support a specific nonprofit organization. Once established, grants are made annually to the organizations(s). Foundation staff monitors the organization to honor your philanthropic intentions. This type of fund will support the long-term objectives of the organization and allows the donorís name to be attached to the name of the fund. With a designated fund at Legacy Foundation, you receive professional management and grant monitoring. This is a great way to memorialize a personís name in honor of the organization they loved!

Donor Advised Funds
Donor advised funds are established by donors who wish to actively participate in the grant-making process. Individuals who establish a donor advised fund recommend charitable projects or organizations they want to support. Through a Donor Advised Fund, you -- and your children, if desired -- can have an active hand in your charitable giving. You can suggest which organizations should be supported, such as your high school or college, church, or other favorite charity. Many donors send out several donations throughout the year to different charities of their choice. This type of fund is a great way to stay involved in the use of your gift!

Field of Interest Funds
Donors who select these funds are able to benefit specific programs in the arts, education, or another broad area. By naming a program area and not a specific organization, flexibility exists to meet the ever-changing needs of the community.

Organizational Endowment Funds
Many nonprofit organizations establish an endowment fund with us in order to grow assets to meet both current and future needs. They look to our Board of Directors for strong investment oversight services and ask our staff to manage all of the administrative details of the endowment. This can provide a relatively constant source of annual income and help maintain their mission in perpetuity. It also frees the nonprofit to focus on what they do best in our community.

Scholarship Funds
The creation of a scholarship fund is attractive to many donors and can be structured to benefit students at any education level, or for a specific institution. A scholarship fund can also be established to honor a loved one.

Some donors choose to stay involved through advisory relationships, while others name advisory committees to assist in the selection of recipients. Either way, our staff will handle the necessary paperwork and will ensure that scholarships are distributed in an equitable manner.

Unrestricted Funds
Unrestricted funds are not specifically designated for use by a particular agency, cause or area of interest. Our Board of Directors oversees the use of these funds, setting priorities for their use and determining how grants will be distributed to support the charitable needs of our community. Unrestricted funds give us the ability to respond to pressing and often changing needs in the community.

Supporting Organizations
Supporting organizations are separate corporations related to Legacy Foundation with their own board of trustees and the ability to award grants and operate programs. Supporting Organizations receive all the benefits of a ìpublic charity,î because of the affiliation with Legacy Foundation, which often provides an alternative to establishing a private foundation. In some instances, staffing resources of the Foundation are available to assist with grantmaking or programming services.

Let us help you select the fund that works best for your particular giving situation.
